Personally I like to use Fire Wall when you're overwhelmed with enemies, it helps hold them back a little easier and it also deals some damage to them while they try to cross it! It also depends on what kind of mage you want to be though, if you're focusing solely on being an elemental mage, then it depends what element you're focusing on (No duh Ruder, of course that's true ;-;)

You'd be able to set a fire wall anywhere as long as it's on the ground and you've got enough mana. When attacking what I like to do is set a fire wall, lure an enemy into it, and then strike them while they're burning or set one right on top of the enemy. I also like to stand in/next to the fire wall since it only does harm to your enemy so that's good I think, it serves like a barrier for yourself (sort of, enemies can still technically hit you but they burn while attacking) and a weapon for your enemies.

The cons about fire wall is that it takes a lot of mana (I think) so it's kind of costly. I don't know how long it lasts, but I think it's shorter than those lotus lizard barriers (ahaha me and my little to no knowledge about Paw'd, a game I've been playing for more than a month now).

Not sure about any other advantages and disadvantages, there's someone out there who would know more than me for sure. I hope I helped though, even if just a little.

I personally think that firewall is a good skill, however embers and ignite are very important too. Firewall is a good skill for extra damage and keeping enemies away from your character like Ruder said, but embers and ignite can be used to get back mana. Firewall isn't as essential to being a fire mage as embers and ignite. If your target has embers, you can ignite them to get back a fraction of the damage back as mana.

I usually have enough points to get firebolt, embers, ignite and firewall to the most I can get it to. Not sure if this applies to you or not, but I find that many mages tend to have skill sets that consist of more than one element (fire, water, wind). I like to focus only one element at a time in a skillset so that I can get higher levels and more skills in that element. If I have to change, you can always talk to a npc and ask them for a skill reset. I always get arcane skills such as mana shield and harvest mana because those help a lot too. Mana shield allows you to use mana as if it was health (It absorbs damage and drains your mana for the amount of damage received). As a mage, health is hard to get back while mana can be easily replenished (embers and ignite for fire skills).

Fire Wall is a bit too costly early in the game. ESPECIALLY during the east cave questline. You can do this though...

                    (Firewall casting site)           (You)            (Enemy)

Run towards casting site, Cast Firewall, Enemy goes through wall, Slap him with every spell you have. XD. If you have potions, Use it at the start of an encounter but this will reduce your mana points significantly.

It has its own Cons and Pros and its up to you to decide whther you use it or not. I've seen mages who does not use firewall and invests more points in spam skills like Firebolt. I usually use the stratedgy above if I run into a random monster
