Well, I can shed light on the connection error - if login attempts repeatedly fail ('name taken' does count as a failed login attempt, unless you used the 'New Account' option, which doesn't verify passwords however), the server will refuse any logins from your place for a while. That part is basically a protection against guessing passwords - the more often you try, the more quickly it'll go into that mode where it just doesn't accept any logins anymore.
