A monster's "aggro range" is a circular area around it. If the monster is hostile to you, stepping inside this area will make it engage you in combat.
The exact size of the aggro range depends several factors:
- Monsters have different kinds of aggro ranges. If a kind of monster is more aggressive, it will attack you sooner than others.
- If you are much lower level than a monster, it will attack you from farther away. Conversely, if you are much higher level than a monster, you will need to come very close before it will attack you.
Certain abilities that make you more difficult to detect (in particular Stealth or Invisibility) also affect a monster's ability to see you (and thus engage you in combat). This is not true for extrasensory monsters, which can see through both effects as if you were not invisible.
