Ignore my noob mistake at making multiple characters too early.
Um, so after I finished the "Rude Awakening" quest, I logged off. When I logged back on, I saw I still had some rope and checked if I could sell it, then this happened:

Wait, I just checked my inventory and I had no rope left, I must've left it on the hotkey.

You can enter anything in there (even really high numbers), but it's going to fail if you don't actually have that many.
