Skill Usage
Ice Spikes is a burst damage AoE spell that mages use to combat groups of earth or fire element monsters. It deals a single hit of high damage with moderate mana consumption and low cooldown. However, it has a shorter radius than Lightning Bolt and Spike Trap, being prone to miss if using it against a monster that likes to move a lot. It is one of two AoE spells apart from Blizzard which mages that focus on water skills will choose from.
One advantage is the fact that Ice Spikes can reach the max skill level of 6 much sooner than Blizzard (Lv. 6 is unlocked at level 42), yielding a higher amount of DPS in a short time. But due to it's lack of range and single burst, there is a three second off-time because of the cooldown, thus Blizzard has more DPS over a sustained period of time and bigger range.
Notes
Ice Spikes can be combined with other skills in the meantime while it is on it's cooldown:
- Using Icicle during the cooldown of Ice Spikes is a good way of keeping up with your DPS, capable of dealing high damage, but can put a strain on your mana consumption.
- Using Frigid Splash prior to Ice Spikes can increase your chances of performing a critical with it. This can lead to a very high amount of burst damage.
- Mist of Ice with the Intense Cold passive allows you to have a another skill used by you as long as the monster can stay within the short radius of the mist, dealing a high amount of DoT.
